The ISPS Goes Carbon Friendly

In 2023, the Irish Steam Preservation Society made history by powering its iconic National Steam Rally with carbon-neutral biofuel for the first time.

Decarbonising Our Heritage Sector

The Irish Steam Preservation Society CLG located in Stradbally, Co. Laois is a celebration of Ireland’s rich steam engine heritage. The annual National Steam Rally  event attracts steam enthusiasts from all over the world, who come to marvel at the impressive displays of vintage machinery, steam engines, vehicles and enjoy a huge variety of amazing events and activities.

In 2023, The National Steam Rally event was particularly special because it was powered by carbon friendly  biofuel for the very first time.

Nicola Glynn, Company Secretary and Director of the ISPS was quoted by saying “The use of this carbon friendly coal alternative at the National Steam Rally is a testament to our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy practices. The biofuel used at the rally was supplied by Arigna Fuels and is produced using sustainable methods, which minimises the impact on the environment. By using this carbon friendly fuel, the National Steam Rally is setting an example for other events and industries, demonstrating that it is possible to enjoy our rich heritage while also protecting the planet for future generations”.
Our railway runs for 1km through a beautiful forest, taking to you back in time for a taste of the glory days of steam power. Each trip lasts about 10 minutes but tickets are valid all day for unlimited journeys, uniquely powered by Arigna Fuels’ carbon-neutral biocoal.
