Quick Details

Journey Through Time on Ireland’s Oldest Heritage Railway

The Stradbally Woodland Railway opened in 1969 as the first volunteer-run heritage railway on the island of Ireland.

Located within the grounds of Stradbally Hall, it began with a short section of track laid for the 1968 National Steam Rally, where a Guinness Brewery steam locomotive pulled small passenger carriages.

The line was relaid to 3ft gauge in 1969 following the arrival of our steam locomotive, the pride of the fleet – 1949-built Andrew Barclay 0-4-0WT Róisín. She spent her working life on the bog railways of Laois and Offaly and has called Stradbally home for over 50 years.

The railway preserves rare examples of Ireland’s industrial heritage, particularly local steam and diesel locomotives, and helps educate visitors about this often-overlooked chapter of Irish history.
